Retired City Educator Dies at 81 in Hospital

Mrs. Beatrice M. Gehring Smith, 81, of Le Roy, whose career as a school teacher and principal extended over 40 years, died at 6:45 p, Thursday, Oct. 18, 1984, at Genesee Memorial Hospital, where she was admitted Sept. 24.

A former resident of 269 State Street, she studied at the former Geneseo Normal School and University of Rochester, and taught all eight grades in Batavia District School 8 in 1923. Four years later, she began her career with the City of Batavia School District and taught at Brooklyn School and Junior High School.

In 1946, Mrs. Smith was appointed principal of Brooklyn School and in 1955, she was named Robert Morris School principal. She served at Robert Morris 10 years preceding her retirement.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the New York State Teachers Association, Daughters of American Revolution, Quota Club and First Church of Christ, Scientist. She was a widow of Leverette E. Smith.

Surviving are a sister, B. Pauline Gehring of 13 Roosevelt Ave., a brother, Carl Gehring of Dayton, Ohio; nieces and nephews and cousins.

There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be conducted at H.E. Turner and Co. Inc., Mortuary at 3:30 pm Sunday. Interment will be in Grand View Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to LeRoy Village Green Nursing Home, 10 Munson Street, LeRoy, where Mrs. Smith resided five years.
