BETHANY - Mrs. Jean W. Adams, 84, of East Bethany, a local teacher and librarian, died Wednesday, August 30, 2000, at Highland Hospital, Rochester.

Mrs. Adams was born June 6, 1916, in Galeton, PA. a daughter of the late Loren and Helen Lowe Whittaker.

She was a graduate of Salamanca High School and Fredonia Normal School with a bachelor of science degree and Geneseo State College with a masters degree in library science. She was a second grade teacher at Jackson School, a librarian and reading specialist at the Batavia Middle School for several years, and part-time librarian at Genesee Community College.

A member of the First Presbyterian Church in Batavia, she was also a member and past matron of the Order of Eastern Star, No. 276 and state chaplain. She was a member of the Ladies of Kiwanis, Republican Women's Club and Holland Purchase society.

Her husband, Clarence R. Adams, died May 30, 1989.

Surviving are three sons, Loren J. Adams of East Bethany, Gerald (Sharon) Adams of Stephantown, and Eric (Laurel) Adams of Oakfield; five grandchildren; one niece and three nephews.

She was a sister of the late Max and Nila Whittaker.

Friends may call from one to three and six to eight pm, Friday, at H.E. Turner and company Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, where services at 8:00 am Saturday will be followed by burial in West Middlebury Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or to the East Bethany Volunteer Ambulance Squad.
